This is a great resource for teaching students how to write informational stories.
Here is the rubric I use for informational writing at the end of the quarter:

When helping students write an informational stories, remember these tips:
*Please note that each writing piece does not need these exact words. However, they do need each piece (introduction, facts or steps, and closing)
- The goal of informational writing is for the writer to TEACH the reader something. They can teach how to do something OR all about something.
- For example, students can write a how-to story about how to ride a bike, how to walk a dog, how to do ballet.
- With how-to writing, writers are writing STEPS (step 1, step 2, etc)
- Students can also write all about a topic, such as all about dinosaurs, all about Benjamin Franklin, all about cookies.
- With all about writing, writers are writing FACTS about a topic
- For example, students can write a how-to story about how to ride a bike, how to walk a dog, how to do ballet.
- Each writing piece needs an introduction where the writer says what he/she will be teaching about.
- "I am going to teach you how to..." or "I am going to teach you all about..."
- Each writing piece also needs a closing where the writer re-says what he/she taught the reader about.
- "Now you know how to..." or "Now you know all about..."
*Please note that each writing piece does not need these exact words. However, they do need each piece (introduction, facts or steps, and closing)
